What to know first
- The strongest salary evidence is a job description for the exact role and office, checked on October 3, 2026.
- Published New York base rates vary by track: $300,000 for QT, QR and SWE; $250,000 for data engineering; $225,000 for trading desk operations engineering.
- An annual rate, a monthly equivalent and an entire internship payment are different units. The calculations below use 52 weeks and exclude bonuses.
- Levels.fyi contains individual reports with sign-on bonuses and housing. These are useful examples, not a company-wide entitlement.
- A New York salary cannot establish a London or Hong Kong offer. Keep local currency, role, season and benefits attached to every comparison.

How much does a Jane Street internship pay?
The most useful answer starts with the exact internship. The following figures are disclosed on Jane Street’s own New York job descriptions, checked October 3, 2026. Each describes a May–August internship. The linked titles do not specify a calendar year, so this is a snapshot of the published rates, rather than a promise about every 2027 offer.
| New York internship | Published base salary rate, USD/year | Original employer source |
|---|---|---|
| Quantitative trading | $300,000 | Quantitative trader internship |
| Quantitative research | $300,000 | Quantitative researcher internship |
| Software engineering | $300,000 | Software engineer internship |
| Data engineering | $250,000 | Data engineer internship |
| Trading desk operations engineering, TDOE | $225,000 | TDOE internship |
Base salary is the recurring cash rate. It does not establish a signing payment, the monetary value of housing, or take-home pay. A candidate comparing two internships should first calculate base cash for the actual dates, then add any separately documented cash payments.
The distinction between roles also matters. A data engineer, a software engineer and a trading desk operations engineer can all work on technical problems at the same firm while having different posted pay. A headline about “Jane Street interns” can conceal those differences. Save the role title and original link alongside the number.
Annualised, monthly and hourly pay: translating the units
An annualised salary describes the pace at which you earn money. Think of it as a rate: an internship pays for a limited period at that rate. Multiplying it by the fraction of a year worked gives an approximate base payment.
For comparability, this guide uses 52 weeks per year:
Estimated weekly base = annual base ÷ 52.
Estimated internship base = annual base × paid weeks ÷ 52.
| Annual base rate | Average monthly equivalent, annual ÷ 12 | Weekly equivalent, annual ÷ 52 | Illustrative hourly equivalent, annual ÷ 2,080 |
|---|---|---|---|
| $300,000 | $25,000.00 | $5,769.23 | $144.23 |
| $250,000 | $20,833.33 | $4,807.69 | $120.19 |
| $225,000 | $18,750.00 | $4,326.92 | $108.17 |
The hourly column assumes 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. It is a unit conversion, not a statement that an internship is contracted hourly, that every working week lasts 40 hours, or that overtime has a particular treatment.
Similarly, $25,000 a month is an average monthly equivalent of a $300,000 annual rate. A four-week period would instead be approximately $23,077. A calendar month is usually longer than four weeks, so those numbers can describe the same salary without contradiction.
Your offer and payroll conventions control the actual payment. Partial weeks, start and finish dates, and the employer’s proration method can produce a different result. Use these conversions to compare like with like, then ask the recruiter to confirm the base cash payable across your specific internship dates.
What does that mean for a 10-, 11- or 12-week summer?
Jane Street’s internship overview describes programmes that usually run for 10–12 weeks between May and September, alongside off-cycle opportunities. A May–August title is a seasonal window; it does not mean every intern is paid for all four complete months.
These are our rounded estimates of gross base cash, using the 52-week convention above:
| Published annual base rate | 10 paid weeks | 11 paid weeks | 12 paid weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| $300,000 | $57,692 | $63,462 | $69,231 |
| $250,000 | $48,077 | $52,885 | $57,692 |
| $225,000 | $43,269 | $47,596 | $51,923 |
For example, $300,000 × 11 ÷ 52 = $63,461.54 before rounding. This is neither a company-published summer total nor a guaranteed amount. The table excludes signing payments, relocation cash, meals and housing, and makes no tax deduction.
Do not multiply $25,000 by three just because an internship touches June, July and August. An 11-week placement lasts about 2.54 average months under this convention. The paid period is the relevant input, even when a programme spans parts of three calendar months.
An off-cycle placement can be longer or shorter. Recalculate using its own dates and annual rate rather than borrowing the standard summer duration. If an offer gives an explicit total payment instead, compare that contractual figure directly and do not replace it with our estimate.

Convert annualized pay into an internship estimate
Uses 52 weeks per year. Your offer and payroll calendar determine actual payments. Keep bonuses at zero unless your own offer confirms them.
- Weekly base estimate
- $5,769.23
- Internship base cash
- $57,692.31
- Base + confirmed bonus
- $57,692.31
Formula: annualized base ÷ 52 × paid weeks + confirmed bonus. Estimates exclude tax, housing, travel, meals and deductions. A monthly average (base ÷ 12) does not mean four weeks of pay.
Signing bonuses and housing: what individual reports can show
Levels.fyi’s Jane Street internship page displays a Summer 2026 New York entry with $25,000 monthly pay, a $25,000 sign-on bonus and corporate housing. It also displays a Winter 2027 New York entry with $25,000 monthly pay and a $40,000 signing payment. These are third-party reports, checked October 3, 2026.
Treat them as examples of reported offers. They do not establish a minimum, an average or a promise for another candidate. The page heading says software engineer, but several rows carry quantitative trader, researcher or developer tags. The role label within a row matters more than the heading alone.
Here is how to reconcile a headline with a base rate. Assume, purely as an example, that an intern has a $300,000 annual base, 11 paid weeks and a separately confirmed $25,000 signing payment:
| Cash component in this hypothetical offer | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Base for the internship | $300,000 × 11 ÷ 52 | $63,461.54 |
| Signing payment | Separate assumed cash term | $25,000.00 |
| Gross cash before any deductions | Sum of the two cash components | $88,461.54 |
That example explains how a total near $88,000 can coexist with a $300,000 annual base. It does not mean every intern receives that package. A headline near $80,000–$90,000 requires a stated duration and additional cash terms; it cannot be derived from base salary alone for every 10-week placement.
Keep employer-provided housing outside the cash total. If you estimate its value, label it separately and explain the valuation. Accommodation worth a particular amount to a company may save you a different amount, and it does not become money in your bank account.
New York, London and Hong Kong: what is actually confirmed?
The official internship programme page identifies New York, London and Hong Kong as internship locations. Pay evidence differs between offices.
| Office | Salary evidence reviewed | Benefit evidence reviewed | Safe interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| New York | Five role-specific employer salary disclosures above | Third-party offer reports describe housing and signing payments | Use the matching JD for base; confirm additional terms in your offer |
| London | The reviewed official SWE programme description gives no numeric salary | A current official TDOE description explicitly includes flights and accommodation | No employer-verified GBP salary figure established by these sources |
| Hong Kong | The reviewed official SWE description gives no numeric salary | That SWE description explicitly includes flights and accommodation for the programme | Benefits are confirmed for this listed role; cash salary remains unverified here |
Sources: London SWE programme archive, London TDOE description and Hong Kong SWE description. The London SWE archive is explicitly closed, so use it for programme context and go to the current open-roles page to apply.
Older London and Hong Kong rows on Levels.fyi can provide historical context, but the page displays figures in USD. A dollar amount associated with a London location is not a GBP quote. Converting it today would also combine a historical offer with a new exchange rate.
For a useful regional comparison, obtain the current offer in its original currency, calculate cash for the same number of paid weeks, and list accommodation and travel separately. Any currency conversion should state its rate and date. We do not infer London or Hong Kong pay by exchanging the New York salary.
Which benefits count towards the package?
Jane Street’s general benefits page describes office meals and amenities. Its internship overview also shows breakfasts, lunches, classes and social activities. Neither page assigns a cash value to an individual intern’s package.
Use the following questions when reading an offer:
| Component | Question to resolve | How to record it |
|---|---|---|
| Signing payment | When is it paid, and are there repayment conditions? | Separate cash amount and payment date |
| Accommodation | Is it provided directly, an allowance or reimbursement? Which dates are covered? | In-kind provision or stated cash allowance |
| Travel | Which journeys and costs are covered? Must you book through the employer? | Reimbursement or employer-booked travel |
| Meals | What is available during the programme? | Benefit, without inventing a cash equivalent |
| Relocation | Are moving costs separate from accommodation and travel? | Explicit cash or reimbursement terms |
Be careful with similar-looking wording. Reimbursement normally requires an eligible expense; an allowance is a stated payment; employer-provided accommodation is a service. Adding all three as if they were unrestricted cash can overstate an offer.
The official interviewing FAQ also describes covered travel and hotels for interviews. Interview travel is a different benefit from relocation for an internship. Do not use that FAQ alone to claim the employer pays every intern’s flights or summer accommodation.
Gross pay, take-home pay and comparing another offer
The calculations on this page are before deductions. A payroll deposit can be lower than the quoted gross payment, and it is not necessarily your final after-tax income. Personal circumstances, the work location and the treatment of particular payments affect the result; we do not calculate an individual tax bill here.
For budgeting, separate three questions. How much gross cash will the employer pay? When will that cash arrive? Which expenses must you fund before reimbursement or your first payday? Even a large package can require money upfront if your signing payment comes later and accommodation is reimbursed after submission.
To compare another internship, use a consistent worksheet:
- Enter each offer’s exact role, office, season and currency.
- Calculate base cash for the actual paid period, or use an explicit contractual total.
- Add only cash payments documented for your offer.
- List supplied housing and travel beside the cash figure.
- Compare payment dates, conditions and your expected living expenses.
- Evaluate the work and mentorship as well as pay.
A higher monthly rate does not automatically produce a higher total if the placement is shorter. A housing allowance can increase gross cash while leaving more of your expenses to you. These are practical differences that a single compensation number cannot describe.
Application timing and choosing the right internship
Start with Jane Street’s current open roles and the precise office and track. The firm’s interviewing FAQ says applications are reviewed on a rolling basis and typically have no single deadline. That is more reliable than treating a third-party month-by-month calendar as fixed.
The work differs across tracks. The trading JD describes quantitative projects and mock-market learning. The research JD emphasises investigating data and models, including experiment design and time-series work. The SWE JD focuses on building maintainable software with mentors. Data engineering centres on understanding and transforming unfamiliar datasets; TDOE works on trading workflows and operational infrastructure. Read those responsibilities before choosing by salary.
Eligibility is also role-specific. The reviewed New York TDOE posting asks for candidates planning to graduate in 2028. The QR posting welcomes current students and also graduates considering a move into finance. A blanket rule that every internship is only for current undergraduates would exclude candidates the employer explicitly welcomes.
For research preparation, a small, reproducible analysis with clear assumptions is useful practice. QuantSteps’ free Returns Lab lets you work on explaining returns and drawdowns; the assessment can help identify foundation gaps. Those learning activities support the research direction. They do not establish eligibility, secure an interview or promise the salary discussed here. Trading and SWE candidates should also follow the employer’s role-specific preparation guidance.
Questions and answers
Do Jane Street interns receive $300,000 for the summer?
No. The reviewed New York QT, QR and SWE postings publish a $300,000 annual base rate. Our 52-week estimate gives approximately $57,692 for 10 paid weeks or $69,231 for 12, before tax and excluding extra payments.
How much is Jane Street intern pay per month?
A $300,000 annual rate has an average monthly equivalent of $25,000. A four-week period is approximately $23,077 under our 52-week convention. Your actual payroll schedule and paid dates determine deposits.
Are all Jane Street internships paid at the same rate?
No. The New York descriptions reviewed on October 3, 2026 publish $300,000 for QT, QR and SWE, $250,000 for data engineering and $225,000 for TDOE. Check the exact role and office.
Is a $25,000 signing bonus guaranteed?
No. Levels.fyi displays a Summer 2026 New York report with that bonus, alongside other reports with different terms. It is a reported example. A payment is confirmed for you only when it is part of your offer.
What is the verified Jane Street London intern salary?
The London employer sources reviewed here do not disclose a numeric GBP salary. Historical USD-denominated third-party reports are not a current London offer. Ask the recruiter for the local base rate and exact paid duration.
Does Jane Street provide housing and flights?
The reviewed Hong Kong SWE and London TDOE postings explicitly include flights and accommodation. New York third-party reports also mention housing, but benefit terms should be verified for your own track and offer.
How long does the internship last?
The official programme overview says internships usually last 10–12 weeks between May and September, with off-cycle placements also available. Confirm your own start and finish dates before calculating total pay.
Is this a guaranteed 2027 salary table?
It is a dated record of employer job descriptions checked on October 3, 2026. The linked New York titles identify seasonal windows rather than an explicit year. Future postings and individual offers can change.
