Quant Developer Salary: US Pay, Bonuses & Offer Comparisons
Compare five official US quant development and trading-firm engineering pay disclosures, experience requirements, bonuses and reproducible offer calculations.
On this page
Quant developer salary depends on the engineering work and employer. Five official US job descriptions checked on 3 October 2026 include $140,000–$150,000 annual salary for an Invesco quantitative developer, $225,000 base for a Two Sigma campus software engineer and $300,000 base for a Jane Street software engineer. These are advertised jobs, not a market average. Additional pay is separate where disclosed; no employer in this sample specifies a bonus amount.
What to know first
- Identify the actual team: research platform, trading systems, portfolio analytics or another engineering function.
- Keep advertised salary, discretionary bonus and one-time sign-on payments in separate columns.
- Our five-posting sample illustrates differences between jobs; it cannot estimate a national median or a universal experience ladder.
- Campus roles at selected trading firms are relevant to graduate engineers, but not every financial software job has the same compensation.
- A language requirement is evidence of the work, not proof of a fixed C++ salary premium.
- Compare cash timing and the second year alongside a first-year headline. The examples and calculator below use explicit assumptions.
How much does a quant developer make in the US?
There is a substantial difference between the salary for a particular job and a statistic describing a whole occupation. For a current job comparison, start with the official disclosures in the next table. They cover investment analytics, graduate engineering and experienced engineering. The spread reflects different jobs and employers; it does not describe the probability of receiving any one offer.
For wider context, Indeed’s US quantitative developer page reports $181,187 average annual base salary, using 260 salaries from job postings over the preceding 36 months, updated 27 September 2026. That is a job-posting aggregate across a broad title and a long observation window. It is not average total compensation, a survey of every employed developer, or a graduate-only benchmark. We checked the displayed figure on 3 October 2026.
A practical answer therefore has two parts: use a clearly defined aggregate for broad context, then use a matching employer, role and office to evaluate your own target. Adding an assumed bonus to the aggregate would produce a new estimate with no evidence behind it. All dollar amounts on this page are annual US dollars before tax unless a worked example explicitly says otherwise.
Five official salary disclosures, with role and experience context
Evidence snapshot: 3 October 2026. This is a deliberately selected sample of five advertised descriptions, including two campus roles. It is not a representative survey. Links were readable at the check date; an application page being available does not establish how many seats remain. No publication date was visible in the four evergreen descriptions; Invesco displayed a relative posting age and a stated closing date.
| Employer and exact advertised title | Office or geographic scope | Annual salary disclosure | Experience or entry route | Additional pay and observed status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Invesco: Senior Quantitative Developer, R-15682 | Downers Grove, Illinois | $140,000–$150,000 salary; page does not label this as total compensation | Bachelor’s in a relevant quantitative field; 2 years in specified quant analyst/developer work and 1 year in specified portfolio/asset-management work | No quantified bonus; page and Apply link available; stated end date 11 October 2026 |
| Two Sigma: Software Engineering Full-Time Campus Hire (NYC), 14014 | New York | $225,000 base | Campus hire; technical/quantitative bachelor’s, master’s or PhD; no numerical year minimum | Discretionary bonus and benefits described, amount absent; page available |
| Citadel Securities: Software Engineer – University Graduate (US) | New York, Miami | $235,000–$300,000 base | University graduate; computer science/engineering or related bachelor’s, master’s or PhD | Discretionary incentive amount absent; description and application form available |
| Jane Street: Software Engineer | New York | $300,000 base | General engineering posting; no numerical experience requirement or graduate-only label | Annual discretionary bonus, amount absent; page and Apply link available |
| Citadel: Software Engineer | US offices listed include New York, Greenwich and Houston; London/Singapore also listed | $150,000–$300,000 base in US-dollar disclosure; no office-specific split | 6+ years of professional software engineering; relevant bachelor’s minimum | Discretionary incentive amount absent; page and application entry available |
Retain the official title when interpreting a row. Software engineering at a quant firm can include work beyond models or trading execution. Conversely, an employer can call a role “Senior” while requiring fewer years than another employer’s general engineering posting. The two Citadel businesses are distinct employers; their rows should not be merged into one salary ladder.
These disclosures do not tell us the expected bonus, the accepted offer within a range, or typical pay for employees already working there. The Citadel international posting also does not establish equivalent London or Singapore compensation. For a current decision, reopen the exact source and check that the title, location, currency and compensation paragraph still match.
Which engineering work does the salary pay for?
“Quant developer” is a useful search term, but it is an incomplete job specification. Before comparing numbers, ask who uses the software, what must be correct, and what performance constraints matter. The following framework is our way of reading job descriptions, rather than a claim that employers use identical team names.
| Engineering direction | Typical problem to investigate | Evidence of ability you can demonstrate | What to clarify in a job description |
|---|---|---|---|
| Research platform and data | Make experiments reproducible and data usable at scale | A tested ingestion process, versioned inputs and repeatable experiments | Data volumes, research users, distributed compute and production ownership |
| Execution and trading systems | Turn decisions into reliable market interactions | Deterministic event handling, profiling and explicit failure recovery | Latency budget, concurrency, market connectivity and operational duties |
| Portfolio analytics | Support portfolio construction, reporting or risk analysis | Correct calculations, validated data and useful decision tools | Asset classes, numerical methods, analytics stack and end users |
| Wider financial engineering | Build services and platforms used across a financial business | System design, testing, observability and reliable releases | Whether the role is desk-aligned, central infrastructure or a business platform |
The Invesco description gives a concrete portfolio-analytics example: data pipelines, reporting, portfolio optimization and automation with tools including Python, R and SQL. Two Sigma’s campus description lists several possible placements, from research environments and trading infrastructure to other business tooling; it says team matching occurs before the start date. A campus salary therefore does not establish which team you will join.
This distinction makes a shortlist more useful. An engineer who enjoys numerical data workflows may find a different fit from someone interested in CPU behavior and event processing. A salary comparison should follow that distinction instead of treating every engineering job in finance as high-frequency execution.
Graduate, mid-career and senior pay: compare scope before years
The two explicitly campus/graduate rows above are the clearest examples for new graduates. The general Jane Street description does not specify a minimum number of years, so it should not be relabeled “2027 graduate salary” without a separate graduate posting. Citadel’s six-year minimum belongs to that specific general engineering role, while Invesco’s “Senior” title has its own stated requirements.
For a mid-career search, build a comparison group of jobs you could actually perform. Record the required experience, expected independence and production responsibility. A table made from different companies cannot measure the salary gain one person receives after three years of work. It also cannot justify extrapolating a $300,000 base into a principal engineer’s million-dollar total package.
Useful progression questions include:
- Entry: Can you implement, test and explain a bounded component with help?
- Independent contributor: Can you own an ambiguous problem through design, deployment and maintenance?
- Senior scope: Can you make system tradeoffs, reduce failure risk and improve how others work?
- Technical leadership: Can you coordinate decisions across teams and demonstrate the effects of those decisions?
These are preparation prompts, not employer promotion criteria. In conversations with a recruiter, ask which of these responsibilities the advertised salary range covers and what evidence would place a candidate within that range. A title and an experience count are useful filters; the actual scope is what makes the comparison credible.
New York, Chicago and C++ versus Python: what can you infer?
This sample contains several New York jobs and one Illinois asset-management job. That does not measure a New York premium: employer, job family and hiring level change at the same time as geography. The Citadel Securities description lists the same published range for New York and Miami without separate city bands. A claim such as “add 10% for New York” would require comparable observations that this table does not provide.
Compare local offers by keeping the role and compensation basis fixed first. Then write down the location-dependent costs that matter to you, such as housing and commute, rather than importing a salary adjustment from an unrelated city table. International offers need their original currency and benefit structure; a dollar disclosure should not be applied to a London role simply because the page lists both offices.
The language question needs similar care. Jane Street describes OCaml as a primary tool and Python as important in research and trading, while saying prior knowledge of those languages or finance is not required. Citadel’s experienced engineering role accepts expertise in Java, C++ or Python. Those examples do not support a universal formula awarding extra pay for C++ or reducing pay for Python.
For an execution-focused role, demonstrate performance analysis and systems judgment. For research tooling, demonstrate data correctness and reproducibility. A programming language becomes valuable through the problems you can solve with it. The relevant question is whether your work meets a particular team’s engineering needs, not whether a salary guide puts one language above another.
Base, bonus, sign-on and deferred compensation
An offer can quote a salary rate, an estimate of total compensation, and a first-year guarantee. They describe different things. Keep each component visible before adding anything.
| Component | Record in your comparison | Question that prevents a misleading total |
|---|---|---|
| Base salary | Annual rate and actual paid months | Does the figure describe a full year at work or your start-year pay? |
| Discretionary bonus | Scenario amount, decision date and payment date | What is contractual, and what depends on a later decision? |
| Guaranteed bonus | Exact covered period and conditions | Is it a bonus floor, a total-package floor or an amount already included in another figure? |
| Sign-on payment | Amount and payment timing | Is it paid once, and what repayment conditions does the offer state? |
| Deferred bonus | Award amount, cash date and vesting conditions | How much is paid during the comparison year and how much remains conditional? |
| Equity and benefits | Instrument, valuation assumptions or employer contribution | Is this spendable cash, contingent value or a separate benefit? |
None of the five official descriptions above quantifies a discretionary bonus. An incentive program means additional compensation is possible under the employer’s terms; it does not establish an expected payout. Avoid treating a recruiter’s target or a peer’s strong year as a contractual floor.
For a clear first-year comparison, define the period as your first twelve months of employment. A calendar year starting with a September joiner contains fewer paid months. Record the actual payment timing as well: “earned for year one” can differ from “cash received during year one.” If a contract’s terms are ambiguous, ask the employer to clarify them in writing before putting a number in the guaranteed column.
Two offers with the same headline and different cash profiles
These are invented teaching examples, not employer offers or salary predictions. Both assume twelve paid months, all stated guarantee conditions satisfied, and no equity, benefits or tax included. The bonus floor is part of the annual bonus, never an extra payment added on top of it.
| Assumption or calculation | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Annual base | $200,000 | $230,000 |
| One-time sign-on, paid during year one | $60,000 | $10,000 |
| Contractual first-year bonus floor | $40,000 | $0 |
| Total first-year bonus in the chosen scenario | $80,000 | $100,000 |
| Bonus deferred beyond year one | 50%, or $40,000 | 0% |
| First-year salary + sign-on + awarded bonus | $340,000 | $340,000 |
| Cash within year one in this payment scenario | $300,000 | $340,000 |
| Awarded amount at the stated bonus floor | $300,000 | $240,000 |
| First-year cash at the floor, with the same deferral rule | $280,000 | $240,000 |
For A, awarded compensation is 200,000 + 60,000 + 80,000 = 340,000. Cash received in the specified window is 200,000 + 60,000 + 40,000 = 300,000, leaving $40,000 deferred. At the bonus floor, half of the $40,000 bonus is deferred, so floor-year cash is $280,000 rather than $300,000.
For B, the chosen $100,000 bonus is a scenario. Its lower contractual amount in this example is 230,000 + 10,000 = 240,000. If both first-year bonuses repeated without sign-on or a continuing guarantee, A’s salary-plus-bonus amount would be $280,000 and B’s $330,000. That is an assumption, not a forecast.
The offer calculator below lets you change these components and see the arithmetic. It uses a user-entered bonus floor and scenario, with deferral applying proportionally to the whole bonus. Real offers can have more complicated timing and conditions. Its recurring comparison uses base plus your scenario bonus, excluding the one-time sign-on and first-year floor.
Work through an offer
Quant developer compensation calculator
Change the assumptions to compare awarded compensation, cash timing and recurring pay. Defaults reproduce invented Offer A above. This calculates your inputs; it does not estimate market pay.
- First-year awarded compensation
- $340,000
- Cash received within year one
- $300,000
- Deferred first-year bonus
- $40,000
- Awarded amount at the bonus floor
- $300,000
- First-year cash at the bonus floor
- $280,000
- Recurring salary + scenario bonus
- $280,000
Year one means the first twelve months of employment. Assumptions: twelve paid months; base and sign-on paid within that period; a bonus floor included within the bonus; your deferral percentage applies to the whole bonus; all stated eligibility conditions satisfied. First-year awarded bonus is the larger of your floor and scenario. Recurring pay removes the first-year floor and sign-on and uses your scenario bonus. Tax, equity, benefits, repayment and vesting are excluded. Actual contracts can use different rules.
How does developer pay compare with researcher and trader pay?
A developer builds the software; a researcher investigates models and evidence; a trader manages trading decisions and implementation in a particular setting. Those responsibilities can overlap. A useful pay comparison holds employer, office, hiring level and compensation components as constant as possible.
Developer base pay alone cannot be ranked against a trader’s reported total package. Likewise, one employer’s senior portfolio manager is a poor reference for another employer’s graduate software engineer. If you want to compare career directions, use two layers: the work you would enjoy and be capable of doing, then the relevant official compensation evidence. Keep unquantified bonuses separate in both columns.
Our broader quantitative finance salary guide compares bank, research, trading and engineering work using consistent pay definitions. This developer page goes deeper on engineering scope and offer arithmetic. Neither guide establishes a fixed ordering in which every researcher earns more than every developer. Outcomes depend on the actual position and package.
For role exploration, compare the research path, developer overview and trader overview. QuantSteps currently provides its deepest learning material in quantitative research. The developer overview describes the direction and shared foundations; specialized engineering training remains planned. A research course should not be treated as a substitute for the systems preparation a developer job requires.
Build evidence of engineering ability before chasing a pay band
Pick a project that makes a relevant engineering tradeoff visible. These independent preparation tasks are examples, not questions supplied by any employer.
Research infrastructure: ingest a small dataset, preserve a versioned raw copy, validate fields, and run the same experiment from a documented command. Include a deliberately malformed input and show that the program fails clearly. A polished chart without reliable inputs is weak evidence of engineering ownership.
Execution-style systems: implement an event replay over synthetic market messages. Decide how the program handles duplicate, missing and out-of-order events. Add correctness tests before benchmarking. Report the benchmark environment and latency distribution, then explain one bottleneck. Do not claim exchange-grade performance from a laptop demonstration.
Portfolio analytics: implement a numerical calculation with clear units and independently checked outputs. Separate the calculation from the data source and presentation layer. Include a boundary case and explain the failure mode the test catches.
Each project should have a concise README, reproducible inputs, tests, a result and a limitation. The purpose is to show reasoning about correctness and maintenance, not to promise an interview or a salary. Compare your evidence with the specific job description, and identify the next missing skill rather than attempting every finance topic at once.
Use our official employer directory to reach hiring sources, then search the employer’s own board for engineering roles. The directory is primarily research-oriented; it is not a complete live developer vacancy feed.
A checklist for a useful compensation conversation
Before a discussion, prepare a comparison of roles that match your work and level. Write down which numbers come from official descriptions and which depend on assumptions. Then ask focused questions:
- What team, level and office does this offer cover, and how is the base range determined for this role?
- Which bonus amount is guaranteed in writing, and for what employment period?
- If the guarantee is a total-compensation floor, which components count toward it?
- When are sign-on and bonus payments made, and which conditions attach to them?
- How much of an award is deferred, what conditions apply, and when can it become cash?
- What does the package look like after the one-time payment and first-year guarantee end?
- What production support, on-call or office expectations accompany the work?
Save the answers with the offer’s dates and terms. A public pay range is useful context for this conversation; it is not a personalized entitlement or a promise that the top of the range is available. A comparison becomes stronger when you can explain why a role fits your engineering experience and what each compensation figure actually measures.
Frequently asked questions
What is the average quant developer salary in the US?
Indeed displayed $181,187 average base from 260 job-posting salaries over 36 months, updated 27 September 2026. That broad aggregate is a different measurement from our five official role disclosures and from total compensation. See the source and check its date before using it.
How much can a new graduate earn?
The explicitly campus examples in this guide disclose $225,000 base at Two Sigma NYC and $235,000–$300,000 base at Citadel Securities in New York/Miami. They describe selected employers and roles, not the typical graduate across finance. Additional bonus amounts are not disclosed.
Does a quant developer need C++ to get a high salary?
Use the language requirements of the role you are targeting. The official examples here span several languages and engineering directions. They do not provide a controlled comparison showing a fixed C++ pay premium over Python or other languages.
Is a software engineer at a quant firm the same as a quant developer?
There can be substantial overlap, but the employer’s title and team scope matter. Engineering can support research, execution, central infrastructure or other business functions. This page retains official software-engineer titles rather than claiming every financial engineering role is model development.
How much is the annual bonus?
The employers in our five-description sample do not publish a bonus amount. A discretionary incentive description cannot supply an expected payout. Ask about the actual offer’s guarantee, decision process and payment timing, and keep any assumed payout labeled as a scenario.
Can senior developers earn less base than new graduates elsewhere?
A senior title at one employer and a graduate title at another are not directly comparable. Our disclosed rows overlap and differ by work, employer and entry requirements. They do not track an individual’s promotions or measure the effect of an extra year of experience.
Can I use these US salary numbers for London?
Keep London offers in their stated currency and local role context. A global posting with a US-dollar salary paragraph does not establish an equivalent amount for every listed office. This guide does not estimate London pay or invent a currency-adjusted pay band.
