Citadel Quant Salary: Official Base Pay, Bonuses & Offers
Compare eight official Citadel and Citadel Securities quant salary disclosures, graduate and experienced roles, PhD requirements, offices and offer calculations.
On this page
Citadel advertises $235,000–$300,000 annual base salary for its US university-graduate quantitative research analyst role. Its US PhD research and research-engineering graduate postings disclose the same range, as do selected Citadel Securities graduate roles. Additional incentive compensation is discretionary and its amount is not disclosed. Experienced-role examples differ by team; the evidence below separates those postings from graduate pay and keeps offices, qualifications and bonus terms visible.
What to know first
- Citadel, the investment manager, and Citadel Securities, the market maker, are distinct firms. Match the employer before comparing pay.
- Eight official full-time disclosures provide role-specific base ranges, not an employee average or an assured total package.
- A posted base salary plus eligibility for discretionary incentives does not establish a signing bonus, guaranteed bonus or total compensation.
- US graduate research analyst and PhD researcher ranges overlap. These postings do not measure a PhD pay premium.
- The reviewed London researcher and Miami trader pages do not disclose a salary range. A New York range cannot fill that gap.
- Compare first-year guarantees, later recurring pay, actual payment dates and repayment conditions in separate columns.
How much does a quant at Citadel earn?
The clearest graduate benchmark is $235,000–$300,000 in annual US base salary, stated in Citadel’s university-graduate quantitative research analyst posting. That figure excludes an additional discretionary incentive program. The employer does not quantify the bonus in that posting, so adding a guessed bonus would turn a documented salary into an unsupported total-pay estimate.
For experienced applicants, the relevant comparison depends on the team. Selected Citadel research and research-engineering postings below disclose different base ranges, including roles in Global Quantitative Strategies and the Data Strategies Group. They are separate jobs with different requirements, rather than steps on one published pay ladder.
This guide answers the salary question with eight full-time employer disclosures, an internship calculation and a practical way to read an offer. The sources were reviewed on 3 October 2026. All full-time ranges are annual base pay in the employer’s dollar notation. The US-designated roles supply US salary evidence; multi-office disclosures need the currency and applicability checks below. These are advertised ranges, not accepted offers, measured averages or forecasts of what an individual applicant will earn.
Citadel vs Citadel Securities: identify the employer and job
Citadel identifies itself as a multi-strategy alternative investment manager and explicitly describes Citadel and Citadel Securities as distinct financial firms. Citadel Securities is a market maker. Their similar names make it easy to combine two employers’ salaries by accident.
| Employer or role | What the distinction means for your comparison |
|---|---|
| Citadel | Compare investment research or engineering jobs with the relevant strategy and team |
| Citadel Securities | Compare market-making research, trading or engineering jobs with the relevant product and team |
| Quantitative research analyst or researcher | Look for responsibility for hypotheses, statistical models, signals and empirical evaluation |
| Quantitative trader | Look for market decisions, risk, pricing and implementation of trading strategies |
| Quantitative research engineer | Look for software and systems that implement or support research and trading |
The role descriptions can overlap. A trading role may require statistical research; a research role may require substantial programming. Use the responsibilities, academic entry route and team to decide whether two offers are comparable.
Equal advertised bases also do not establish equal packages. Two jobs can share a salary range while differing in their actual offer, incentive arrangement, location and responsibilities. The disclosures support a comparison of posted base pay. They cannot establish which firm pays more in total, or which team offers a better career for you.
To place research jobs in a broader context, use the US quant researcher salary guide. For software responsibilities, the quant developer salary guide separates research engineering from other engineering specialties. Those comparisons help identify a matching role rather than treating a Citadel range as a universal quant salary.
Official Citadel quant salary ranges by role
Every row links to the employer’s own description and was reviewed on 3 October 2026. All eight full-time postings describe additional discretionary incentive compensation without a numerical amount. The salary column excludes those incentives.
| Employer and official role | Locations listed on the page | Annual base salary as published | Qualifications or scope |

Read multi-office rows carefully. The GQS pages list international locations alongside a dollar-denominated disclosure. They do not provide a separate local-currency range for every office. Retain the published dollar notation and confirm the currency and office applicability with the recruiter before using it for a Hong Kong or Singapore offer.
“Graduate” identifies an academic recruiting route. It does not mean every applicant receives the top of the range. A general research posting also cannot be assigned a precise experience band when the employer does not state one.
The pages were readable at review time. Some explicitly invite candidates to share details for vacancies that may arise. A published description or application form therefore does not prove that a particular office or team has an immediate opening.
Base salary, bonus and total compensation are different numbers
A salary search becomes useful when every dollar has a label. An annual base is a rate for a full year of employment. A one-time joining payment changes the first year. A performance-dependent incentive changes the outcome, but its eligibility wording alone supplies no amount.
| Component | How to record it | What to confirm in the offer |
|---|---|---|
| Annual base salary | Recurring annual rate before tax | Start date, payroll schedule and proration |
| Signing payment | One-time amount in its own column | Payment date, repayment period and triggers |
| Guaranteed bonus | Written guarantee for a specified period | Conditions, payment date and whether it includes another bonus |
| Target or discretionary bonus | Variable amount, separate from guarantees | Whether it is a target, a forecast or simply eligibility |
| Relocation or housing support | Reimbursement or benefit separately | Limits, documentation, payment terms and repayment |
| Deferred compensation | Amount and future payment schedule | Vesting, forfeiture, valuation and access |
For a full paid year, gross compensation = base + applicable joining payment + actual bonus + other paid compensation. Benefits require their own treatment; covered accommodation is not automatically extra cash in your bank account.
The most common arithmetic trap is adding a first-year guarantee to a target bonus when the guarantee already includes the bonus. Ask whether a guarantee is an additional payment or a minimum that tops up the final incentive. If it is a $100,000 minimum and the final eligible bonus is $130,000, that structure produces $130,000 of bonus, not $230,000.
Keep an offer’s contractual terms separate from what a recruiter describes as possible. The official full-time sources here confirm incentive eligibility but do not establish signing amounts, bonus schedules, deferral policies or a firm-wide compensation formula. Those details belong in your offer review.
Worked example: equal first-year packages can age differently
The following offers are invented arithmetic examples, not Citadel offers or estimates of market pay. Assume each starts at the beginning of a full paid year, all listed guarantees are unconditional for that year, and the first-year bonus is separate from the signing payment.
| Component | Example offer A | Example offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Annual base | $260,000 | $280,000 |
| One-time signing payment | $75,000 | $20,000 |
| Guaranteed first-year bonus | $65,000 | $100,000 |
| First-year guaranteed gross amount under these assumptions | $400,000 | $400,000 |
| Annual base after the signing payment disappears | $260,000 | $280,000 |
The headline totals tie, but B has a higher recurring base. Neither first-year bonus automatically continues. To compare year two, remove the signing payment and the expired guarantee, then model the variable bonus separately.
| Hypothetical year-two bonus | A: base plus bonus | B: base plus bonus |
|---|---|---|
| $0 | $260,000 | $280,000 |
| $100,000 | $360,000 | $380,000 |
| $200,000 | $460,000 | $480,000 |
These are scenarios, not probabilities or forecasts. They expose what is recurring and what relies on performance. A real comparison should also show when cash arrives: a guarantee paid after a review cycle is different from cash paid on joining.
Start dates create another mismatch. At an annual base of $260,000, six paid months would produce $130,000 of base if the contract prorates evenly by months. A quoted annual rate is therefore not the same as cash earned in your first calendar year. Check the actual payroll convention and whether the bonus is prorated.
Finally, add a column for amounts you could have to repay. A signing payment with an early-departure repayment condition has a different practical value from the same amount without that condition. Do not assign a precise discount without understanding the agreement.
Graduate, experienced and senior pay: what can be established?
The available disclosures support role-specific observations, rather than a reliable “year one, year three, year seven” schedule. The graduate rows have defined academic entry routes. Other rows focus on capability and team responsibilities, sometimes without a numerical experience requirement.
The GQS researcher description emphasizes predictive modeling, portfolio optimization and demonstrated research achievement. The GQS C++ engineering description emphasizes production systems, performance, reliability and advanced engineering expertise. DSG focuses on statistical modeling and alternative-data research. Those distinctions help explain what work is being compared; the postings do not isolate the causal effect of tenure on pay.
| Career stage or question | Useful evidence | Remaining uncertainty |
|---|---|---|
| University graduate | Dedicated graduate posting and your written offer | Placement within the range and variable compensation |
| PhD graduate | Dedicated PhD posting with degree requirements | Any individual premium beyond the overlapping advertised ranges |
| Experienced researcher or engineer | Closest team description, responsibilities and required skills | An exact mapping from years of experience to compensation |
| Senior researcher, lead or portfolio manager | The specific team’s offer and compensation agreement | A typical salary, universal bonus share or firm-wide maximum |
An experienced-role range can overlap a graduate range. That is not evidence that experience has no value: the jobs may differ, and the published base omits the amount of incentives. Equally, the possibility of a large incentive does not establish how much a senior employee usually receives.
For progression, ask about research ownership, production responsibility, promotion criteria and how contributions are assessed. These questions connect pay expectations to the work you will actually do. A title ladder copied from an unrelated employer or a few unusually successful employees is a weak substitute.
Do you need a PhD, and does it guarantee higher salary?
A PhD is required for the specifically labeled Citadel PhD researcher, Citadel PhD research engineer and Citadel Securities PhD researcher roles reviewed here. That requirement does not extend automatically to every job with “quant” in its title.
The university-graduate research analyst row accepts bachelor’s or master’s degrees. DSG lists bachelor’s, master’s and PhD qualifications; the GQS C++ engineer row does too. The GQS researcher asks for an advanced degree, which should not be silently rewritten as a PhD-only requirement.
The disclosed graduate base ranges overlap across academic routes. They do not demonstrate a fixed PhD salary premium, equal offers to all applicants, or the financial return to spending additional years in graduate school.
Use a degree as evidence of relevant work you can do. For research, explain an empirical question, how you tested it, what would falsify the result and where uncertainty remains. For engineering, show how you built and validated dependable systems. Those are sensible ways to map your background to the descriptions; they are preparation suggestions, not a promise that a degree or project leads to a particular salary.
New York, Miami, London and international offices
Office labels matter even when the job title is identical. Citadel Securities’ New York graduate trader page publishes a base range, while its separate Miami graduate trader page did not display one when reviewed. The general US trader URL redirected to Miami. A search snippet or old link is therefore insufficient to identify the salary disclosure you are reading.
Citadel’s European PhD researcher page lists Dublin, London and Zurich but did not state a salary range in the reviewed description. There is no verified London number in this guide. Converting a US salary into pounds or applying a guessed location discount would not establish a London offer.
For an international comparison, first obtain the contractual amount in its payment currency and clarify the office and employing entity. Then compare recurring base, first-year guarantees, benefits you would actually use and payment dates. An exchange rate can help with a chosen comparison date, but it cannot fill a missing local salary disclosure.
Housing, relocation and personal living costs can materially affect your choice. Record your own expected expenses rather than treating a city-wide stereotype as the value of a specific offer. The right office comparison uses the actual contract and your circumstances.
Citadel quant internship salary and an 11-week calculation
Citadel’s US quantitative research analyst internship states a base range of $4,500–$5,800 per week and describes an 11-week program, with New York, Miami and Greenwich listed. It also says interns may be eligible for joining, housing and travel support, without quantifying those amounts.
For 11 fully paid weeks, the disclosed rate implies:
| Calculation | Gross base for the program |
|---|---|
| $4,500 × 11 | $49,500 |
| $5,800 × 11 | $63,800 |
These totals are arithmetic from the stated weekly rates and duration. They exclude additional support and are before tax. Confirm your own paid dates and rate rather than assuming the entire range is available to every applicant.
Multiplying the weekly rate by 52 may make a comparison look impressive, but it is not the pay for an 11-week internship. Keep program earnings beside program duration. Likewise, accommodation paid by the employer differs from a housing cash allowance; list the arrangement separately.
An internship offer also does not prove the salary or probability of a later return offer. The graduate disclosures are a separate comparison. Ask what conversion process applies and when any later full-time terms would be confirmed.
How to evaluate and discuss a Citadel offer
Start with a written breakdown before discussing a headline total. A useful negotiation explains the particular gap you want to close: recurring base, first-year certainty, joining costs or payment timing. The public range helps you frame a question; it does not guarantee flexibility or entitlement to its upper bound.
- Confirm employer, team and office. Record the full job title, recruiting route and employing entity. Match the posting that actually applies to your offer.
- Separate annual rate from first-year cash. Write down the start date, base, signing payment, guarantee and variable bonus individually.
- Clarify how the guarantee works. Ask whether it supplements the bonus or sets a minimum, which performance period it covers and whether any amount is prorated.
- Ask about evaluation. Understand the review cycle, how your work will be assessed and which elements of incentives are discretionary. Ask for the policy that applies to your role rather than assuming a firm-wide formula.
- Record payment and deferral. Ask which amounts are cash, which are deferred, when they become payable and what conditions remain.
- Check leaving conditions. Identify any repayment, forfeiture, notice or post-employment restrictions in your own agreement. Ask for clarification of ambiguous terms; online claims do not establish your contract.
- Compare a genuine alternative consistently. Match currency, paid period, recurring base and guarantees. Show variable compensation as scenarios on both sides.
- Prioritize the request. Explain the strongest relevant evidence and the specific change you seek. Do not invent competing offers or cite exceptional anonymous compensation as if it were a standard package.
For example: “I understand the offer has a $260,000 annual base and a one-time joining payment. Could you clarify which part of the first-year incentive is guaranteed and whether the guarantee includes the discretionary bonus? I would also like to discuss the recurring base in light of my relevant research experience.” The numbers are hypothetical; the point is to ask a question the recruiter can answer precisely.
The official full-time postings mention benefits such as medical and life insurance and retirement or savings programs, but do not quantify their value for a particular employee. Request the office-specific benefit information. Avoid inflating the total with benefits you cannot use or uncertain future awards.
Use the salary research to choose what to prepare
A salary table helps identify a role; the job description tells you what to develop next. For research applications, prepare to explain a statistical result beyond its headline performance. Document the question, data availability, assumptions, baseline, validation and failure cases. A defensible null result can demonstrate better judgment than a backtest with hidden future information.
For quantitative engineering, make the system behavior explicit. Describe correctness checks, performance measurements, reliability choices and what happens when inputs or services fail. Use the actual description to decide whether to emphasize research implementation, C++ performance or distributed systems.
The quantitative research learning path connects foundations to independent research practice, and the jobs directory links to employer career sources. These are preparation resources, not Citadel-endorsed training or a collection of verified company interview questions.
Choose the next activity because it closes a concrete gap in your target role. A compensation headline alone cannot tell you whether trading decisions, empirical research or production engineering is the best fit.
How this salary guide is sourced and maintained
The salary table is a selected set of official job descriptions, reviewed on 3 October 2026. It keeps the employer, role, listed offices, pay period and degree requirements attached to each disclosure. Its purpose is to make specific comparisons auditable; it is not a representative employee survey.
Public salary submissions can supply a different perspective, but a reported total and a posted base answer different questions. Before using an aggregate, inspect the role classification, office, report dates, sample size and treatment of signing payments or deferred awards. A median of submitted packages is not automatically the median of the employer’s workforce, and a level label is not automatically a verified career ladder.
The calculation examples are explicitly hypothetical or derived from the stated internship duration. No undisclosed bonus, London range, typical portfolio-manager income or tenure-based total-pay curve has been estimated. When a source changes, the affected table row and every repeated answer should be reviewed together so the headline and detailed content remain consistent.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary for a Citadel quant?
Citadel’s US university-graduate quantitative research analyst posting lists $235,000–$300,000 annual base salary, with additional discretionary incentives. That is a posted range for the named job, not a guaranteed offer or total-compensation range. Your written offer establishes the actual amount.
How much does a Citadel Securities quantitative trader make?
The New York university-graduate trader posting discloses $235,000–$300,000 annual base plus discretionary incentives with no stated amount. The separate Miami page reviewed on 3 October 2026 did not publish a salary range, so this New York disclosure should not be presented as a verified Miami salary.
What is a Citadel quant’s total compensation?
The reviewed official full-time postings do not quantify incentives, so they cannot establish a typical total package. Add your actual base, applicable one-time payments and actual or contractually guaranteed bonus. Keep a target or discretionary bonus separate and check whether a guarantee already includes it.
Does Citadel Securities pay more than Citadel?
The selected graduate disclosures show overlapping base ranges. They do not establish equal individual offers or a ranking of total compensation. Compare the actual employer, role, team, office, written guarantees and recurring pay rather than combining both firms into one average.
Do you need a PhD to become a Citadel quant?
The specifically labeled PhD graduate researcher and research-engineering jobs require a PhD. Other reviewed roles accept bachelor’s or master’s qualifications, including the university-graduate research analyst route. Requirements belong to the individual posting; a PhD is not a universal condition for all quantitative jobs.
How much does Citadel pay quant interns?
The reviewed US quantitative research analyst internship lists $4,500–$5,800 base per week for an 11-week program. Eleven fully paid weeks would therefore produce $49,500–$63,800 gross base. Additional joining, accommodation or travel support is mentioned but not quantified; confirm your own offer and paid duration.
What is the Citadel quant salary in London?
The European PhD researcher description reviewed here lists London alongside Dublin and Zurich but does not disclose pay. This guide has no verified London salary range. Obtain the relevant local-currency amount from the recruiter or your offer; a converted US salary is not evidence of London compensation.
How much do senior researchers or portfolio managers earn?
These sources do not establish a representative senior or portfolio-manager total. Experienced research and engineering postings provide specific base disclosures, but do not disclose a universal bonus share, maximum payout or salary ladder by years of experience. Evaluate the actual team and compensation agreement.
Can I negotiate a Citadel quant offer?
The reviewed postings do not state how negotiable offers are. You can ask for clarification and discuss a specific component using relevant experience or a genuine comparable offer. First confirm base, guarantees, payment dates, deferral and repayment terms, then state the change you want and why.
