Quantitative Trader Salary 2026: Base Pay at 6 Firms
Compare seven official quantitative trader base-pay disclosures, graduate and experienced roles, discretionary bonuses, net P&L and first-year offer examples.
On this page
Jane Street’s New York quantitative trader description lists $300,000 base; Citadel Securities’ New York university-graduate trader lists $235,000–$300,000; Flow Traders’ New York graduate trader lists $175,000. Other graduate and experienced examples below show why these figures are individual job disclosures, not an industry starting range. Incentives are unquantified, and a trader’s P&L does not establish their bonus without the actual compensation agreement.
What to know first
- Keep employer, desk, office and recruiting route attached to each salary. Seven selected postings cannot establish a national average or career ladder.
- A graduate trading programme, an experienced strategy owner and a portfolio manager are different comparisons.
- Discretionary firm or team rewards and a contractual P&L formula require different calculations. None of these sources gives a personal P&L share.
- A first-year incentive guarantee may be a minimum within the final bonus. Adding both can double-count pay.
- Compare the profit definition, allocated costs, loss recovery, award conditions and payment dates before valuing a trading package.
How much does a quantitative trader make?
There is no single salary for everyone called a quant trader. The most useful evidence is a disclosure for the work and entry route you are considering. Jane Street’s NYC trader lists $300,000 base, while Citadel Securities’ New York graduate trader lists $235,000–$300,000. Both describe discretionary additional compensation without stating an amount.
The tables below cover seven official job descriptions, checked on 3 October 2026. Base figures are annual amounts before tax. US-specific rows use USD; the international Citadel Securities row retains the source’s dollar notation with an applicability warning. None establishes your accepted offer, realized bonus or expected total compensation.
For research-focused work, use the researcher salary guide. For a broader career comparison, the quantitative finance salary guide separates research, bank modeling, trading and engineering.
Official quantitative trader base salaries by employer
These are selected disclosures, each counted once. A visible description or application control does not confirm an available seat. Additional compensation has no published numerical amount in these sources.
| Employer and official role | Office and recruiting scope | Annual base | Additional compensation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jane Street: Quantitative Trader | NYC; general description, including training for new traders | $300,000 | Annual discretionary bonus |
| Citadel Securities: Quantitative Trader, University Graduate | New York; dedicated graduate route | $235,000–$300,000 | Discretionary incentive programme |
| Flow Traders: Graduate Quantitative Trader | New York; Fall 2027 start | $175,000 | Annual discretionary variable remuneration |
| GTS: Quantitative Trader — 2027 Graduates | New York ETF group; May 2027 graduates | $150,000–$225,000 | Other compensation excluded from base; no bonus formula stated |
| DV Trading: 2027 Quantitative Trader Graduate, DV Equities | New York; graduation by Summer 2027 | $80,000–$100,000 | Discretionary bonus |
| DRW: Quantitative Trader — Futures | Chicago; senior remit, 7+ relevant years and direct P&L ownership | $150,000–$250,000 | Annual discretionary bonus |
| Citadel Securities: Quantitative Trader | New York, Miami, Hong Kong, London, Singapore; general experienced-product remit | $175,000–$350,000 as published | Discretionary incentive programme |
The final row is a multi-office description, not five verified local salaries. Confirm currency and office applicability; a dollar disclosure alongside London does not establish a London USD offer. It also invites candidate details for vacancies that may arise, so treat it as a talent-interest description rather than a confirmed immediate opening.
Different desks and training arrangements prevent interpreting these rows as a market band or total-pay ranking. Recheck sources before applying.
Graduate, experienced and senior trading pay
Compare campus routes with campus routes. Citadel Securities, Flow, GTS and DV explicitly identify graduate recruiting. Jane Street explains that new traders initially assist experienced colleagues and gain responsibility, but its general description is not a graduate-only salary observation.
DRW’s futures role is a different job: a senior research and trading lead with at least seven years of systematic-trading experience and demonstrated P&L ownership. Its base overlaps graduate disclosures at other firms. That does not show that experience lowers pay; employer, mandate and unquantified incentives change simultaneously.
Ask who sets positions, approves strategy changes, controls risk and responds to deteriorating execution. Compare instruments, horizon, capital and support.
A senior title does not establish a seven-year bonus or typical million-dollar package. Compare the closest mandate and written terms.
What is the average quant trader salary, and why do sites disagree?
For a broader advertised-base snapshot, Indeed’s US page displayed $179,707 per year, based on 117 salaries taken from job postings over the past 36 months, updated 28 September 2026, when directly read for this guide. That is Indeed’s title-based job-posting average. It is not a survey of realized trader compensation or a graduate salary at any named firm.
Different salary sources answer different questions:
| Evidence | What it can describe | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Employer description | Advertised base for one job | Office, responsibilities, entry route, date and incentive exclusions |
| Job-posting aggregate | The platform’s selected advertisements | Title matching, observation window, duplicates and employer mix |
| Employee submissions | Packages people choose to report | Sample count, report dates, level classification and signing payments |
| Modeled compensation | Outcomes under the publisher’s assumptions | Bonus assumptions and whether figures are estimates or observations |
A platform’s employer ranking can include recruiters or adjacent work. Salary percentiles do not automatically identify career stages.
Use aggregates as context and official descriptions for specific comparisons. Averaging the seven rows here would equally weight deliberately selected, incomparable jobs and give no defensible occupation-wide estimate.
Quant trader, researcher, bank trader and PM: match the work
The boundary between trading and research can be porous. A trader may develop models; a researcher may help deploy strategies. A useful comparison asks what decisions the person owns.
| Role or remit | Questions that clarify the comparison |
|---|---|
| Quantitative trader | Do I manage pricing, execution, positions or live risk? Who authorizes my decisions? |
| Quantitative researcher | Is my output a signal, model or experiment? Who decides whether it goes live? |
| Research engineer | Am I responsible for dependable software and systems rather than trading risk? |
| Bank sales and trading | Does the work emphasize client flow, market making, execution or another mandate? Which desk and seniority apply? |
| Portfolio manager | What capital, portfolio, staffing and risk authority does the agreement assign? |
A PM title is not automatically the next stage for every trader. An independently managed portfolio’s arrangement cannot price a graduate training programme.
Likewise, Citadel Securities’ market-making trader and Citadel’s investment-research jobs belong to distinct firms. The Citadel salary guide preserves that distinction. Equal advertised bases between research and trading do not reveal equal bonuses, working conditions or progression. Choose a matching responsibility before comparing pay.
How does a quant trader’s bonus work?
The reviewed descriptions establish incentive eligibility, not an individual payout percentage. Flow Traders explicitly links variable remuneration to company, group and individual performance and contribution. DRW requires direct P&L ownership for its senior role yet still describes an annual discretionary bonus. P&L responsibility does not, by itself, prove formula-based pay.
Separate three possible structures when reading an actual agreement:
- Discretionary award. Performance can inform the decision without a contractually determined payout. A strong trading year does not supply a numerical bonus expectation.
- Minimum incentive guarantee. The agreement sets a floor for a defined period, subject to its conditions. Determine whether it supplements another award or only tops it up.
- Defined profit participation. A specific agreement may set a percentage and a profit definition. You need both, plus eligibility and payment conditions, to calculate an amount.
Ask how individual attribution interacts with shared research, execution and hedging. A firm-wide bonus pool differs from one trader’s allocated profit.
“Performance-linked” could describe discretionary assessment, a target or a defined calculation. Ask which applies; these sources publish no personal P&L-share formula.
A worked P&L-share example: the denominator changes the pay
This invented teaching agreement has a $200,000 annual salary plus 10% of positive eligible profit. The percentage, costs, loss recovery and threshold are arbitrary example terms, unrelated to any employer above. Assume a full paid year and every condition met.
| Hypothetical calculation | Amount |
|---|---|
| Trading profit before the separately listed costs | $1,500,000 |
| Execution and exchange costs | −$150,000 |
| Financing or borrow costs | −$100,000 |
| Allocated operating costs | −$250,000 |
| Profit after those costs | $1,000,000 |
| Prior losses to recover under this example agreement | −$200,000 |
| Additional profit threshold under this agreement | −$100,000 |
| Eligible profit, floored at zero | $700,000 |
| Incentive at the hypothetical 10% rate | $70,000 |
Eligible profit = max(0, profit after costs − loss recovery − threshold). Under these assumptions, gross salary plus the incentive award is $270,000. Calculating 10% of the $1.5 million headline instead would produce $150,000 and overstate the award by $80,000.
If only $400,000 of pre-cost profit were earned while the same $500,000 costs applied, profit after costs would be −$100,000. Eligible profit would be zero, and the example pays salary only. This teaches the formula; it supplies no probability of either outcome.
If the $70,000 award were half cash now and half deferred, current-period cash would be $235,000, with $35,000 deferred and still subject to its terms. The award and cash received are different numbers.
Confirm expenses are not deducted twice, and clarify attribution, loss carryforward, thresholds, deferral and changed risk limits.
First-year guarantees, signing payments and later-year cash
Consider two hypothetical offers, unrelated to the salary table. Assume full paid years, all conditions met and the listed first-year payments received within year one.
| Component | Example A | Example B |
|---|---|---|
| Annual base | $220,000 | $250,000 |
| One-time signing payment | $30,000 | $10,000 |
| Year-one incentive | $80,000 minimum, inclusive of assessed award | Discretionary; no minimum |
| Year-two incentive | Discretionary; no minimum | Discretionary; no minimum |
For A, year-one cash is $220,000 + $30,000 + max($80,000, assessed incentive). An assessment of $50,000 triggers a $30,000 top-up, producing $330,000 cash. It does not produce $380,000 by adding the assessment and full guarantee.
B also reaches $330,000 if a $70,000 incentive is paid. The headline tie disguises different certainty: with discretionary incentives set to zero, A’s illustrated first-year floor is $330,000 and B’s is $260,000.
For year two, remove signing payments and the expired guarantee. In the zero-incentive scenario, the two-year totals are $550,000 for A and $510,000 for B. B has the higher recurring salary but needs $40,000 of combined incentives to match A’s illustrated downside total.
Replace the assumptions with your agreement. Proration, delayed bonuses, guarantee conditions and sign-on repayment change the comparison. Record assessment period, award date and cash-payment date separately.
Do you need a PhD, finance experience or programming?
A PhD is not a universal condition in these trader descriptions. Citadel Securities’ graduate route accepts bachelor’s, master’s and PhD qualifications. GTS specifies B.S./M.S., graduation in May 2027 and a GPA above 3.6/4.0. DV accepts bachelor’s, master’s or PhD candidates graduating by Summer 2027. Requirements belong to the specific intake; eligibility does not predict placement in a salary range.
Finance and programming expectations also vary. Jane Street does not require prior finance or economics knowledge or a particular programming language. Flow’s graduate description asks for financial-product understanding, mental mathematics and Python, with three months of Amsterdam training before joining New York. An employer’s training does not erase its stated entry requirements.
Experienced applicants should explain relevant risk decisions, attribution and responses to strategy deterioration, subject to confidentiality. These postings measure neither a PhD pay premium nor a certificate’s hiring value.
New York, Chicago, London and international comparisons
The US table cannot establish a New York premium over Chicago. Comparing a New York graduate desk with DRW’s Chicago senior remit changes employer and responsibility as well as location. Shared ranges likewise do not establish identical offers.
The general Citadel Securities page lists international offices but does not provide separately verified local-currency bands. This guide has no established London, Hong Kong, Singapore or Amsterdam salary range. A US figure converted into pounds or euros remains a conversion, not evidence of local compensation.
For two real offers, record contractual currency, required attendance, paid period, recurring base, guarantees and payment dates. Date any conversion. Compare housing and transport from your own budget; separate moving expenses from recurring costs. Training abroad does not automatically change the employing office or turn a US salary into a local salary.
Confirm work authorization and relocation with the employer; salary disclosures do not establish sponsorship or after-tax income.
Questions to ask about a trading offer
Use the public range to frame a precise discussion, then request the terms that determine your package.
- Which employer, desk, office and recruiting route apply? What decisions and risk responsibilities will I own?
- What is the recurring salary, and how is a partial year treated?
- Which first-year amounts are contractual? Is the guarantee inclusive of another incentive?
- Is additional pay discretionary or determined by a defined formula? Which profit and attribution definitions apply?
- Which costs, prior losses, thresholds or shared allocations enter that formula, if applicable?
- When are awards determined and paid? Which amounts are deferred or conditional on remaining employed?
- What could be repaid or forfeited if circumstances change? How are ambiguous clauses clarified in writing?
For negotiation, name the component and relevant evidence. Use genuine comparable offers; a published upper bound does not establish negotiability.
Turn the role requirements into useful preparation
Preparation should develop the decisions the job requires. Practise translating uncertainty into an explicit calculation, explaining risk and revising your reasoning when assumptions change. For coding-heavy descriptions, add small, reproducible analyses with clear inputs and checks. These are general suggestions, not a claim about any company’s interview rounds.
For a simple decision exercise, suppose ten independent trials each win one unit with probability 0.6 and lose one unit otherwise, with no costs. If K is the number of wins, total outcome is 2K − 10. Expected wins are 6 and expected outcome is +2 units, but a positive expectation does not guarantee a positive result.
The chance of losing is the sum of binomial probabilities for K = 0 through 4: approximately 16.62%. At K = 4 the outcome is −2; at K = 5 it is zero. Real trades can be dependent, with changing probabilities and unequal gains or losses.
Try changing the assumed probability and explain what happens to both expectation and downside. Separating those questions is more useful than calling a strategy safe because its average is positive. This arithmetic exercise does not establish a trading edge, a bonus forecast or readiness for live risk-taking.
Evidence date, source limits and maintenance
The table is a purposive sample of seven descriptions read on 3 October 2026, assembled for role comparison.
The check date is separate from a posting date or deadline. Some pages describe future opportunities; readable applications do not prove an immediate vacancy. An IMC graduate URL found in search results could not be directly retrieved in this check and was excluded rather than treating its indexed salary as current verified evidence.
When a disclosure changes, update its row and repeated answers together. Keep platform snapshots separately labeled with their dates and pay definitions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the starting salary for a quantitative trader?
The reviewed graduate disclosures include $235,000–$300,000 base at Citadel Securities in New York, $175,000 at Flow Traders, $150,000–$225,000 at GTS and $80,000–$100,000 at DV Equities. These are different jobs and intakes, not an industry starting band; additional compensation is unquantified.
What is the average quantitative trader salary in the US?
Indeed’s directly read US page reported $179,707 annual base from 117 job-posting salaries across the previous 36 months, updated 28 September 2026. That is its title-based advertisement average, not realized total compensation. The seven selected employer descriptions here cannot establish a national average.
Do quantitative traders earn more than researchers?
These sources cannot establish a total-pay ranking. Roles may share advertised bases while differing in incentives and responsibilities. Compare the actual mandate, employer, office, level and offer terms; research and trading can also overlap within one job.
What percentage of P&L does a quant trader receive?
None of these seven employer descriptions gives a personal P&L percentage. A role with P&L responsibility can still have discretionary incentives. For a defined profit-share agreement, confirm the percentage, profit attribution, costs, loss recovery, thresholds, conditions and payment schedule.
Can a senior quant trader make $1 million?
These descriptions do not quantify the incentives needed to calculate that total or its frequency. They cannot establish a typical million-dollar outcome or maximum pay. A senior trader, a graduate and a portfolio manager should be compared using their actual responsibility and agreements.
Do quant traders need a PhD?
It is not universal. Several reviewed graduate routes explicitly accept bachelor’s or master’s qualifications. Entry requirements vary by intake and employer. These descriptions do not measure a degree salary premium or guarantee a particular offer to eligible applicants.
What is the quantitative trader salary in London?
This guide does not establish a London range. Citadel Securities’ general page lists London alongside US and Asian offices with one dollar-denominated disclosure, without verified local-currency mapping. Obtain the relevant local offer; converting a US salary does not create London evidence.
Is a guaranteed bonus additional to the performance bonus?
Only when the agreement says they are separate additional payments. An inclusive minimum tops up the assessed incentive when it falls below the guarantee. Confirm the period, conditions and payment date before adding amounts.
